Coming Soon: Season 4 of Unknown History

In the first week of March 1946, a gruff, heavy-jowled Winston Churchill ascended the lectern at the gymnasium of Westminster college in Fulton, Missouri. On that stage, the eyes of the world on him, the prime minister proceeded to deliver one of the most famous speeches of the post World War II era, calling upon the Western democracies to stand together in unity against the monster in Moscow. He was unsparing in both words and actions, slicing the air with a theatrical chop as he growls the famous words “iron curtain.”

Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest, and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and in some cases increasing measure of control from Moscow…

I'm historian and best-selling writer Giles Milton. In this season of Unknown History, I am telling the tales of post-war Europe and the brave men who kept the west from tumbling into chaos - but also sowed the seeds of the Cold War.
