How to Get Rid of Earwax Without a Q-Tip

How to Get Rid of Earwax without a Q-Tip

Eliminate Excess Earwax

Although earwax is intended to protect your super-sensitive outer ear, too much wax can inhibit hearing, foster infection, and simply be uncomfortable. If you or your family members are prone to lots of earwax, try this easy cleaning solution. You’ll need a medicine dropper or cotton balls, olive or almond oil, and hydrogen peroxide. With head tilted so the ear faces upward, place two drops of oil into the ear canal and let sit for a minute or two. Repeat with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide, and leave for about 10 minutes. When time’s up and the peroxide is no longer bubbling, tip the head to the reverse side so the solution can drip out. Wipe away any drips or excess solution with cotton balls or a towel.

Keep Your Ears from Producing Too Much Wax

If your ears seem to be producing too much earwax, it can be due to dry skin in your ear canals. To keep this from happening, use the olive or almond oil on a regular basis to keep them moisturized. Using the medicine dropper, put five drops of olive oil into each ear, then put cotton balls in your ears for five minutes to allow the oil to soak in. It will nourish the skin and reduce your body’s need to produce wax.

Reduce Earwax Build-Up Daily

You can also use a daily hydrogen peroxide regimen to reduce the current amount of wax in your ears. Add a few drops to each ear and let sit for about 5 minutes before rinsing out in the shower each day.

Talk to Your Doctor

Trust us, doctors aren’t afraid of a little earwax. If you feel that you have excess earwax, talk to your doctor, who can use a special machine to suck out the extra wax safely.

Do You Really Need to Get Rid of that Earwax?

One last thing to consider—you might not need to be removing earwax as much as you think. In fact, most doctors recommend not removing this wax at all! Not only is it useful to your ears (it’s there for a reason—including that it helps repel bacteria), trying to clean it out can actually push it farther into your ear canal, which can make your problem worse and lead to hearing loss.
