How to Extend the Life of Milk and Other Dairy

How to Extend the Life of Milk and Other Dairy

Keep Milk Fresh

Adding a teaspoon of baking soda or a pinch of salt to a carton of milk as soon as you open it will keep it fresh for a week or so past its expiration date. Who knew?

How to Freeze Milk

When you know your milk is going to go bad before you can use up the rest of it, separate it out into a few resealable containers and put them in your freezer. That’s right, milk can be frozen! If you use skim milk, it can be thawed and drunk later, and you’ll never be able to tell the difference in taste. For other varieties of milk, after thawing, use for sauces or baking. This is a great strategy for when you find milk at a deep discount. Buy as much as you can and freeze for later!

Keep Butter Longer

Inside the fridge, margarine and butter quickly absorb odors from other foods. Make sure you always keep them tightly sealed to keep them at their best quality.

Protect Cheese from Mold

Cheese will stay mold-free longer if placed in a sealed plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. Add three or four sugar cubes, which will attract any mold if some does form.

Revive Moldy Cheese

Believe it or not, cheese with a little mold on it is still perfectly safe to eat once you remove the offending areas. The easiest way to do this is to take a knife, dip it in vinegar, and slice the mold off. Dip the knife in vinegar after each slice—it kills the mold and prevents it from coming back.

Make Cottage Cheese Last Longer

To extend the life of cottage cheese and other dairy products in cartons like sour cream, store them upside down. This will keep mold from forming.

Keep Ice Crystals off Ice Cream

Ice cream is another dairy product you should be storing upside down. Why? It keeps the ice crystals off! Now you can enjoy a bowl of ice cream as fresh as the first day you opened it.
