5 Things You Should Know about Your Garbage Disposal

ThingsYouShouldKnowAboutYourDisposal

Deodorizing

A quick and easy way to deodorize your in-sink garbage disposal is to grind an orange or lemon peel inside it every so often. It will get rid of grease—and smell wonderful!

Cleaning

Cleaning your garbage disposal is as easy as throwing a few ice cubes down your drain. Run the disposal until you no longer hear grinding, and the job is done. The cold cubes will congeal any grease in the drain, allowing your disposal to break it up.

Unclogging

You’ve got something stuck in your garbage disposal. Save yourself an expensive repair bill by fixing it yourself. First and most importantly, unplug the garbage disposal or shut off the breaker switch. Next, grab a broom and push the handle against the impeller so that it turns the chamber. Dislodge the item, and reach in to grab it. If this doesn’t work, it’s time to call in the professionals. (Sorry.)

Disposing of Grease Properly

When flushing grease down the drain, don’t use hot water (like many of us were taught). The grease coats the pipes, cools, and will collect bits of debris. Instead, use cold water. It will make sure the grease solidifies in chunks that will easily get flushed through the pipes. Better yet, empty your grease into a soda can and throw it away!

Drain Renewal

Never have a clogged kitchen sink again! Pour a half cup of salt down the drain of your kitchen sink with warm running water. This will freshen your drain and keep it from getting bogged down with grease.
