5 Sneaky Tips for Sending Cards and Gifts

SneakyTipsforSendingCardsandGifts

Postage Prescription

If you’re sending a get-well card to a friend in the hospital, but aren’t sure how long she’ll be there, try this: Put the hospital’s address on front of the envelope, and your friend’s address as the return address. That way, you’re certain she’ll get the card—at the hospital or once she returns home. (Just don’t tell the post office!)

Special Delivery

Mailing a card and want to do something creative for that extra-special touch? Visit your local coin and stamp dealer to find unique, vintage postage sold at face value or less. Many dealers sell old yet valid stamps that aren’t worth much to collectors, so you’re likely to find a bargain on cool, old-fashioned postage.

Inexpensive Delivery

Mailing books, CDs, or DVDs as presents? The cheapest way to get them there is to take your package to the post office and ask for it to be sent “media mail.” Though it will take a little longer to get there, this low rate—reserved for mailing “media”—will save you a lot of money, especially if your package is heavy.

Goodbye, Packing Peanuts

Say “no” to Styrofoam popcorn! There are several alternates that are probably already sitting around your home! Cut-up egg cartons are perfect, and are those plastic grocery bags that have been piling up in your cabinet. Or, make homemade air pillows with Ziploc bags. Seal them all the way, then open them up just enough to fit a straw through. Blow through the straw to inflate them, then reseal and pack with delicate items.

Safe Shipping

When packing up those holiday presents, make sure nothing rattles in the box and the lid closes firmly (without being easily depressed into the box). This will ensure your presents arrive safely, even if heavier boxes are stacked on top (plus, the post office won’t insure your package if it sounds like it contains loose items!). To help fill out the space in a big box, use Ziploc bags. Seal them all the way, then open them up just enough to fit a straw through. Blow through the straw to inflate them, then reseal—a homemade air pillow!
