Silver Storage
If you didn’t get it as a wedding present, you may have silver cutlery that has been passed down from generation to generation. This beautiful silverware is always a nice treat on a special occasion. But as you’ve probably discovered, silver will eventually tarnish if exposed to air for an extended period of time. Keep your silver shiny and beautiful by storing it in airtight containers, or wrapping in tarnish-proof cloths or papers. Never wrap silver in plastic food wrap: It will keep air away, but it can also cause stains and corrosion.
Lemon Juice to Remove Silver Spots
If your silver develops spots, dissolve a little salt in lemon juice, then dip a soft cloth into the mixture and rub it onto the cutlery. Rinse in warm water and finish by buffing to a shine with a chamois.
Put Old Socks to Good Use
Polishing silver is never a neat chore, but an old sock can make it easier. Slip the sock over your hand; use one side to apply the polish and the other to buff it out.
Consider Lacquering Silver
If you have large silver items that are not used with food, consider having them lacquered by a jeweler to prevent tarnishing. Candelabras, vases, and trophies are good candidates for this treatment.
Untarnished Silver
Here’s an easy household solution for polishing up your old heirloom silver. Combine one quart whole milk with four tablespoons lemon juice, and let your items soak in it overnight. The next day, just rinse off your silver and dry it.
Protect Silver from Acidic Foods
Some foods are particularly harsh on silver and will cause it to tarnish quickly: olives, salad dressings, vinegar, eggs, and salt are among them. Wash your silver as soon as possible after it contacts any of these items.
