7 DIY Facial Scrubs and Washes That Are Better Than Store-Bought

7 DIY Facial Scrubs and Washes that Are Better than Store-Bought

Steam Clean

This super-effective pore cleanser couldn’t be simpler. Place three bags of chamomile tea in a medium-sized bowl, and cover with several cups boiling water. Cover the bowl with a towel, and allow the tea to steep for 10 minutes. Then remove the towel, place it over your head, and hold your face over the bowl for about five minutes. The steam will open your pores, and the chamomile will help unclog them.

Rice Face Wash

Everyone knows that rice is a nutrient-rich and delicious food, but did you know that it’s also an excellent addition to your skincare regimen? Loaded with vitamins B and E, the grain will smooth and soften skin when used as a daily face wash. All you’ll need is uncooked white rice and water: Boil a half cup of rice in two cups of water. Take out the rice and let the water cool down. Use a cloth to massage the rice water onto your skin, and rinse.

The 30-Second Skin Reviver

Whether you need to wake up or freshen your skin, here’s the perfect 30-second skin reviver. Place a fresh hand towel under steaming hot water (not boiling—the hottest you get out of your tap is fine), then cover your entire face with it for 30 seconds. Then use the towel or a warm, wet washcloth to buff your T-zone area (chin, nose, and forehead). For a finishing touch, splash cold water all over your face to leave your pores tight and tingling.

DIY Kiwi Facial Cleanser

Here’s an all-natural facial cleanser that works well for normal-to-dry skin types. Purée a peeled kiwifruit with two tablespoons of plain yogurt, one tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of olive or almond oil, and one tablespoon of cornmeal. Add an optional splash of orange water. Rub gently into your face and neck, then rinse well.

DIY Orange Juice Facial Scrub

For an exfoliating and astringent facial scrub, take the juice and pulp of an orange and combine with a half cup of cornmeal or almond meal. Mix until you get a thick paste, adding more juice if needed. Apply to clean skin, massage gently for a few minutes, then rinse for a fruity fresh clean! (You can also try this scrub with lemon. Just squeeze a lemon, and add a little yogurt or water to help moisten the mixture.)

Homemade Lavender Facial Scrub

If you have oily skin, try this sweetly scented scrub. Pulse together one and a half cups of oats, three quarters of a cup of almonds, and one tablespoon of dried lavender in a blender. Mix in three quarters of a cup of honey and one and a quarter cups of white kaolin clay. (You can find the clay online or at stores that carry natural beauty products.) Remove a tablespoon of the scrub and mix with water to make a thick paste. Massage over face and neck, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. The clay will help remove impurities and excess oil, while the oats and almonds will exfoliate and soothe skin. As a bonus, lavender is great for stress relief! Store the leftovers in the refrigerator in a closed container.

Fancy Facial Scrub

Have a teeny bit of champagne or white wine left after a party? Make a face scrub with it! Wine contains tartaric acid, a terrific exfoliant. Mix a few teaspoons sugar with enough wine to make a paste, then massage into clean skin.
