How to Get Rid of Rust on Your Car, Tools, Cast Iron, and More

Loosen a Rusty Nut or Bolt

To remove that pesky rusted nut or bolt, put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide on it, and wait 30 minutes. The peroxide will work its way down into the threads and help loosen the rust.

Vinegar for Rust

Yes, there are a gajillion uses for vinegar. Removing rust in one of them! Pour vinegar into a cast iron pan that’s become rust, or soak the items in the vinegar. Leave for 15–20 minutes, then scrub with a brush or wipe with a damp cloth.

Cola for Removing Rust

When you buy a rust remover, what you’re really paying for is phosphoric acid. However, phosphoric acid can also be found in something you probably have around the house—cola. Dip screws or anything else that needs de-rusting into cola and leave for several minutes. Then scrub away the black substance that remains and repeat if necessary.

All-Pro DIY Rustoleum

If you’re trying to keep something free of rust, here’s a solution you can make. Combine two cups petroleum jelly and a half a cup of lanolin in a microwave-safe bowl, and heat the mixture until it melts together. Stir frequently, and make sure to apply to the rust-prone item while the mixture is still warm. Remember, don’t wipe it off; allow the paste to dry on the item.

Remove Rust Marks with Toothpaste

Did you know that toothpaste can remove rust stains? Apply to fabric and rub with a damp cloth, then rinse before washing. Or rub toothpaste onto rust marks on silverware or tools, let sit for 10 minutes, then wash away. The white, non-gel variety works best.
