Trap Bees and Wasps
In our bugs podcast we told you how to turn a 2-liter bottle into a bug trap. But an even simpler way is to simply leave open cans of soda around the perimeter of your party. Bees, wasps, and other bugs will be attracted to the soda, instead of your guests. (If you can’t beat ’em, let ’em join you?)
Bug Trick for Charcoal Grills
If you have a charcoal grill, keep bugs away and infuse meat with flavor with rosemary or sage. Place sprigs of either (or both) directly on top of smoldering coals. Mosquitoes don’t like the smell and will stay away.
Keep Ants Away
Here’s another way charcoal can keep bugs away—this time, ants. Take a piece of charcoal, crumble it up, and spread the pieces around the perimeter of your picnic area. The ants won’t cross the charcoal path, leaving you to enjoy the food! (Here are more easy ways to get rid of ants.)
DIY Mosquito Coil
A mosquito coil, which you can buy in stores, burns a chemical that’s repellent to mosquitoes. But you can do it at home for much cheaper with smoke from any kind of cardboard. Choose cardboard that isn’t treated, then light it on fire and blow it out. Place it on your grill or somewhere else safe to let it burn and the smoke will drift up and away—repelling mosquitoes while staying away from you and your guests. Keep Bugs Away from Outdoor Lights
You turn an outdoor light on, and the bugs flock to it! Give outdoor light bulbs a citronella candle effect (for much cheaper than the candles themselves) by seeping several cloves of garlic in hot water for 15 minutes. Put the mixture in a spray bottle, and spray on outdoor light bulbs every few days. When the light bulbs are turned on and heat up, they’ll emit a faint garlicy odor that repels bugs.
