Before you drop $10-$15 on harsh chemicals, read up to see if these home remedies can do the trick. From vanilla extract to drops of essential oil, these easy solutions are all-natural and affordable.
1. Lift Odor from Carpets
Pet odors especially can lock into carpets. But you can freshen your rugs, which will improve the scent of the whole room, with a simple remedy. In a mason jar, combine 1½ cups baking soda and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil; mix to break up any clumps. With a nail, punch some holes in the tin lid before placing it on the jar. Then shake the scented powder on your carpet and let it go to work for about 30 minutes before vacuuming. It’s a simple, natural way to shake out odors!
2. Erase Stink with Your Vacuum
To rid your house of pet, cooking, or other smells, put a handful of potpourri or a cotton ball soaked in vanilla or lavender oil into your vacuum cleaner bag. Now when your turn your vacuum on, you’ll release a lovely scent into the air, making odors a thing of the past.
3. Dab It On
Dab a bit of vanilla extract on a light bulb, and when you turn on the lights you’ll also turn on a lovely scent.
4. Make Your Own Poo-Pourri
Know those odor fighters designed to spray into the toilet before you . . . well, do what you need to do? You can save money by making your own! In a small 1.5- or 2-ounce spray bottle, add 15 to 30 drops of your favorite scented essential oil or oil blend. Add witch hazel to fill, put on the lid, and shake before each use. The oils form a film on top of the toilet water, which traps odors.
5. Plants That Purify The Air
Add one of these low-maintenance beauties to spruce up your bathroom and clear the air: Broadleaf Lady Palm, English Ivy, Peace Lily, Red-Edged Dracaena, or Snake Plant.
