How to Get Rid of Bugs with 8 DIY Tips

TheUltimateGuidetoGettingRidofBugs

If you're creeped out by bugs or just don't want to suffer through a swarm of insects, these simple homespun solutions should get you out of the bug bind in no time.

8 Easy Ways to Get Rid of Bugs

  1. Hairspray
  2. Herbs
  3. Mint
  4. Basil
  5. Duct Tape
  6. VapoRub
  7. Garlic
  8. DIY Bug Repellant

Let's dive into each tip a little further.

1. Hairspray

If flies or bees have invaded your home and you want to get them away from you fast, squirt a little hairspray into the air. They hate the stuff and will go elsewhere.

2. Herbs

A number of herbs will ward off crawling insects. The most potent are fresh or dried bay leaves, sage, and cloves. Place any of these herbs in locations where a problem exists, and the critters will do an about-face and leave the premises. Ants, roaches, and spiders may be more difficult to get rid of. If the these herbs don’t work, try mixing two cups of borax with an equal amount of sugar in a large container, and sprinkle the mixture in areas that you know the pests frequent. When crawling insects cross a fine powder, they lose the waterproof layer from their bodies, causing water loss and, ultimately, death.

3. Mint

Here’s a great way to use the gum you regularly confiscate from unruly offspring—leave the mint-flavored variety in the pantry to keep away insects. A few slices (even wrapped) can do wonders.

4. Basil

Basil is not just for pesto! If you have a problem with any type of flying insect, keep a basil plant or two around the house. Drying the basil leaves and hanging them in small muslin bags will also repel flying insects—they hate the sweet aroma.

5. Duct Tape

Each summer we travel to our cabin, and when we arrive there are always droves of flying insects inside. We tape five to ten pieces of duct tape to themselves (making a ring with the sticky side out), then hang them from the rafters near the overhead lights. The bugs become stuck, we throw out the tape, and our problem is solved!

6. VapoRub

Spending some time outdoors at a picnic or barbecue? Rub some Vicks VapoRub on your wrists and ankles to repel insects. They hate the smell and will leave you alone!

7. Garlic

Keep bugs away from your houseplants with garlic. Place a peeled garlic clove, narrow end up, just under the soil of your houseplant. Creepy crawlers will stay from your plants!

8. DIY Bug Repellant

Say goodbye to insects in your houseplants with this formula, which is especially great for meal bugs. Just pour two to three tablespoons of dry laundry soap and one quart of warm water into a spray container and shake well. Spray the solution onto plants immediately; this solution cannot be stored and must be made fresh for each use.
