No need for anything fancy--try these genius hacks to make your own DIY vases and repurpose household items like eggshells and balloons to help you in your hunt for a great vase to hold your flowers.
Makeshift Vase
When you’re serving breakfast in bed, don’t despair if you can’t find a vase for that elegant touch of fresh flowers. Grab a toothbrush holder, which gives a mod look and holds the flowers up quite nicely.
Bring Back a Treasured Vase
Just because there’s a crack in your grandmother’s old vase doesn’t mean you can’t use it for fresh flowers anymore. Just line it with one of those clear plastic bags you get in the produce section of your grocery store, and your problem is solved. It makes for simple cleaning as well! Just dump the water out, then throw away the bag with the dead flowers in it.
Great Decorating Tip for Any Holiday
Fresh flowers and greenery make beautiful holiday decorations, but where do you put them? All you need are some empty wine or other bottles (like beer or juice bottles), old newspaper, and spray paint. Place the bottles outside on the newspaper, spray paint them gold, silver, or the holiday color of your choice, and let them dry. VoilĂ !—unique vases that will have your guests guessing as to where you purchased them.
Eggshell Cleaners
Even eggshells have a great use before you throw them away: getting rid of rings on hard-to-clean places in vases. Fill the vase mostly full with warm water, then add a drop of dishwashing liquid and the eggshells. They’ll act as an abrasive to scrub off the stains.
Another Use for Alka-Seltzer
Effervescent tablets aren’t just good for curing hangovers—dissolve a tablet in warm water at the base of a vase to remove stains and leave it shiny-new.
Vase Exchange
Do you have leftover vases from flowers that are long gone? Ask your local florist (not at the grocery store) if they’d be willing to give you a bouquet of flowers in return for several clean vases! They will probably take you up on it.
Balloon to Bud Vase
Turn any votive holder or small cup into a funky bud vase with an un-inflated balloon. Snip off the tip of the balloon, then stretch it out until you can fit the glass inside. Pull the balloon up over its sides, then tuck the neck ends into the glass and it’s the perfect size for a single flower!
