The Top Fitness Trends for 2017

Ben Greenfield: Welcome to the Get-Fit Guy's Quick and Dirty Tips to Slim Down and Shape Up. My name is Ben Greenfield, I'm the Get-Fit Guy, and if you've been a loyal Get-Fit Guy listener for quite some time, you may be aware of the fact that this podcast has been going since, brace yourself, 2010. To be precise Thursday, May 6th, 2010 was when I recorded the very first ever Get-Fit Guy episode. Now since that time there has been plenty of extremely popular episodes that you can head over to QuickandDirtyTips.com to download. Some of the more popular episodes, actually I can give them to you in order if you'd like to hear them. They are, How to Tighten Skin When You Lose Fat, How to Get Very Strong Without A Gym, Which Exercise Machine Burns the Most Calories, How to Get A Flat Stomach, How to Recover After A Workout, What is the Fat Burning Zone, How to Lose Fat and Gain Muscle at the Same Time, Ten Tips to Build Muscle Fast, How to Burn Thanksgiving Calories, and The Five Best Full Body Exercises. We've literally had millions of downloads since 2010.

So why am I telling you all this? Well just a couple of things. Before we jump into the top workout trends for 2017, which is actually what this episode is about. The reason that I'm telling you all this is because of three things really. First of all, I have an exciting new project in the works that's frankly taking up a lot of time. It's a project that I'm working on to optimize the body, the mind, and the spirit of exercise enthusiasts, and health enthusiasts, worldwide. If you follow me on any of my channels, such as BenGreenfieldFitness.com, or GreenfieldFitnessSystems.com, you'll be able to stay up to date on what's going on with that. Next I'm working on a couple of new books. I have both a fiction book in the works and also a secret project book also designed for optimization of the body, and the mind, and the spirit. And frankly I'm spending quite a bit of time writing.

And finally I'm wanting to give you a fresh new voice, personality, and new information on the Get-Fit Guy show. And so that is why I am telling you right now that I am passing on the reigns of the Get-Fit Guy podcast. I am passing those reigns on to the one person on the face of the planet who above all I consider to be the best equipped to continue to provide you with everything that you need to enhance your energy, and lose weight, and boost performance, and get your body looking better than ever without spending hours in the gym, or spending a ton of money on fitness gear. And his name is Brock Armstrong. He's right here with me now. Brock, hello.

Brock Armstrong: Hey folks, how's it going everybody?

BG: And if you aren't familiar with Brock, you may not know that he is actually my sidekick over on the Ben Greenfield Fitness Show. But he also has extensive experience in the fitness, the movement, and the wellness industry. He's worked with leading personal trainers, coaches, and wellness consultants including Monica Reinagel our own Nutrition Diva here at QuickandDirtyTips.com, Mark Sisson, Katy Bowman, Dave Asprey, Mark Divine. And he has an enormous understanding of functional movement, endurance training, muscle building, and the ever important balance between performance and health. He's helped people all over the world achieve their goals and improve the quality of their life. He was a blogger for the Canadian runner magazine IRun.ca. And in addition to being a guest and a co-host on my own podcast, he's also been on the Primal Endurance show. The Endurance Planet show, and the Whole Athlete. And you can also check out his workplace wellness podcast over at WorkplaceHero.me.

He also runs SkywalkerFitness.ca which is a company that has helped hundreds of people cross the finish line of races like marathons and triathlons since 2011. And Brock, who I guarantee you're going to get to know very well over the next several Get-Fit Guy episodes, is a certified personal trainer. He's a certified running coach, he is what is called an NCCP and CAC triathlon coach. He is a group fitness leader, he's on the advisory board of the Primal Health Coach training. He's a member of my own Superhuman Coach Network. He's an instructor for the Bullet Proof Training Institute. And here is an interesting anecdote about Brock, he is also a former professional ballet dancer.

BA: It's true.

BG: It is true. You can probably point your toes better than just about anybody out there I would imagine.

BA: At least I could 25 years ago.

BG: If you haven't yet picked it up based on his accent, Brock lives in Canada, Vancouver, BC with his partner Eleanor, along with several bicycles. And he is your new Get-Fit Guy host. So please join me in welcoming Brock Armstrong as the new Get-Fit Guy. Welcome Brock.

BA: Thank you so much Ben. It really is an honor. I can't wait to dig in and start producing this show and really getting to know the audience out there as well. So thanks for this opportunity everybody.

BG: Absolutely, and I decided it would be fun, just so you can get to know Brock and the way that he thinks and talks and teaches a little bit better. I thought that I'd ask him, and also let you know my own thoughts, on the top workout and fitness trend predictions that we both have for the remainder of this year, the year that this podcast is being recorded, 2017. So that being said, Brock, what would you say is going to be the top trendy thing coming down the pipeline that's gonna change fitness and the exercise and workout scene for the remainder of 2017. If you could put your finger on one thing that you'd choose.

BA: Ooh, one thing? Well this isn't a brand new thing, but I really do see the wearable technology systems things like Fitbits, things like Garmin, things like the Apple Watch. They're all becoming so much more accurate, and so much more useful these days that I just see them taking on a whole new role in how we quantify and execute our fitness these days. So I think, although it's not brand new, I think they're really going to solidify their hold on the fitness world this year.

I just see them taking on a whole new role in how we quantify and execute our fitness these days.

BG: I was gonna say, Fitbits and Jawbones, etc, they've been around for a while. Are you saying that you think they're just going to begin to measure more than they currently measure, or that they're going to become easier to use, or have simpler to operate interfaces?

BA: All of the above. And even beyond those things that you mentioned the fact that the accuracy has gone through the roof in the last couple years is really, I think that will encourage people to actually start using them on a much more regular basis. It's actually giving us much more useful data too. For the longest time even the heart rate sensors were all over the map. The accuracy I think was only 23%, and in some of them it was even lower than that. But these days the accuracy of the heart rate monitor itself is to the point where it's basically what you could use in a hospital setting, or in a medical kind of setting. You can measure things like HRV from your wrist now where we used to have to wear stick on patches on our chests. And the accuracy of even the calorie counting is getting much more useful, and much more accurate. So I think it's just going to, all those things that you mentioned, plus the accuracy factor, means that we're going to able to use these things so much better.

And just as a teaser, I think that'll probably be one of the first episodes I record for the new Get-Fit Guy. So you can just hang on, wait for that, and I'll explain more later on.

BG: Well I know you'll certainly find me walkin' around half the time wearing anywhere from one to three, or four, or five, of these different wearables that I'm personally testing. And so I completely agree. It's something that all of us in the fitness industry are certainly using. And you know my own prediction for the remainder of 2017 is not too far from yours because it also has to do with technology. For example, I was checking out this new book called Head in the Game after watching the Golden State Warriors recently win the NBA championship just a couple of days ago. And the reason I was reading that book is because it was written by a guy who interviewed on his own podcast, and also wrote a compelling article about Steph Curry, one of the NBA's top players. And how Steph Curry uses things like strobe light goggles to enhance his lateral movement and thought patterns, and float tanks to allow him to meditate and dip into his alpha brainwave zones a little bit better. And TDCS which is a form of electro-stimulation for the top of the head.

And this book, called Head in the Game, goes into these new frontiers of performance enhancement. And you know delving into the neuro-science labs at Duke trying to replicate via neuro-feedback what monks up in the Himalayan mountaintops are doing, to the use of virtual reality and sensory deprivation chambers that are being incorporated by some of the world's best athletes, to what paradigm shattering neuro-scientists are doing to allow athletes to literally look at their brains using things like a headset and a smartphone. And you know in addition to that, Elon Musk, one of the few people I follow on Twitter, and one of the few people who's every word I kind of hang on when it comes to what seems to be coming down the pipeline from a technology standpoint, recently launched a company called Neuralink. And that company is designed to allow computers to literally merge with human brains. He wants to create like this brain computer system that would link human brains with a computer interface, so that humans could communicate directly with computers without going through a physical interface.

And while that may not seem like it has a whole lot to do with fitness, just imagine if you could, for example, be wearing a vest and a headset and a pair of goggles and walk into a gym. And your gym might involve you going back in time and fighting in a medieval battle, or you going head-to-head with boxer Floyd Mayweather, or say Muhammad Ali. And you could go and fight with a UFC fighter like Conor McGregor, or the Diaz brothers. Or you could even for example go hop onto a horse and ride a horse through the plains without ever actually leaving the gym, but instead engaging in something perhaps a little more interesting than a vinyl-backed bench on which you do a bench press.

So I think this world of technology combined with fitness, even above and beyond just self-quantification, is really gonna be something that we see as early as this year in 2017. So that's what I think Brock, it sounds like we're both geeks huh?

BA: I love the picture you're painting of our very nerdy future in fitness. That aligns well with my heart.

BG: Well folks, whether you are into hoisting kettle bells or wearing virtual reality headsets, I guarantee that you're going to get a lot of value out of what you'll experience from this episode in 2017 and beyond. The past seven years have been a wild ride. I hope that I've presented a lot of value to you. I hope that you also know that the hundreds of episodes that I've recorded are all going to be available, along with their transcriptions and their audios, absolutely free over at Quick and Dirty Tips until the rest of all time, or until the internets break. And so you can check out all the previous Get-Fit Guy episodes over at QuickandDirtyTips.com. You can always keep in touch with me via Facebook, via Twitter, it's not that hard to Google my name, Ben Greenfield, plus anything you're looking for. From fat loss to muscle gain, and beyond, and be able to find the things that I've written, or recorded, or produced, or am writing for you. So I promise, I'm not disappearing from the fitness scene at all, I'm just handing over the reigns of the Get-Fit Guy podcast to the extremely capable Brock Armstrong.

And you can find both Brock, and myself, and anything that you want to know about us, or the fitness information that we provide for you, if you simply go over to QuickandDirtyTips.com, or you can join the conversation at http://ift.tt/1xq4tPg where we have plenty more information and compelling conversation happening. And so I suppose at this point, this would normally be the time at which I say, "Until next time, I'm Ben Greenfield asking you, what are you waiting for? Go get fit." But perhaps I should instead ask Brock what his signing off is going to be, if he has one yet.

BA: Ooh. I don't have one yet, but I'll think of a good one I promise.

BG: Let me teach it to you Brock, it goes like this, and until next time.

BA: Until next time.

BG: It's me, Brock Armstrong.

BA: It's me, Brock Armstrong.

BG: Asking you.

BA: Asking you.

BG: What are you waiting for?

BA: What are you waiting for?

BG: Go get fit.

BA: Go get fit folks.

BG: See ya later folks.
