5 Tips to Make Weeding Easier

Effective DIY Weed Killer When to Weed

The first thing you need to know? Weeding is easier when the plants are wet. Save this dull task for post-rain or watering. When you give a yank, it will be easier to get the whole plant out at the root.

Get Weeds Out of Cracks

Want to get rid of the grass growing in the cracks of your sidewalk or patio? Make a mixture of salt and baking soda, sprinkle it into the cracks, and weeds (or grass, or anything else!) won’t grow there.

How to Pull Weeds Without Pulling

The easiest way to weed? With a hammer. Kneel down, turn the hammer backward, and bang it onto the soil to catch the weed between the claw. Now just pull. (Yes, it is okay to weed-hammer when you’re in a bad mood. As long as you can check something off your to-do list while you are at it!)

Get Rid of Poison Ivy and Oak

When it comes to poison ivy and poison oak, you can’t mess around. So if you’ve got a patch of either on your property, kill it. Mix ½ gallon soapy water with a 1½ pounds salt, spray the plant, and run in the other direction. (Note: This will kill grass and other plants too, so be careful!). This is also a great way to keep weeds out of sidewalk cracks!

Keep Gloves Handy

In our family, we’re never all ready to go at the same time. Since we love to garden, we keep a few pairs of garden gloves by the door so the early birds can pull out a few weeds while they’re waiting for the slow pokes. It prevents having to take the time to pull the weeds later—and keeps a certain someone from yelling at everyone else to hurry up!
