8 Bacon Hacks You Need to Know

8 Bacon Hacks You Need to Know

Make Peeling Bacon Off the Slab Easier

Make bacon slices easier to separate by rolling the package lengthwise and wrapping with a rubber band. Keep it stored that way in the refrigerator and the bacon strips will already be somewhat separated when you reach into the package.

Add Bacon to Sweets

If you thought bacon was just for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you’re wrong: It’s for dessert, too! Check out these weirdly delicious recipes for bacon brownies, cupcakes, cookie dough truffles, and more.

Stop Bacon Shrinkage

Bacon that doesn’t shrink means more for your money—and more bacon that you get to put in your dish! Keep bacon from shrinking while you cook it by adding it to a cold pan rather than a hot. Then cook it over medium heat.

Make Bacon on a Stick

Using skewers is a great way to both cook bacon on the grill or in the oven. It’s great for cooking a large amount of bacon at one time, or just impressing your family and friends.

Protect Yourself from Grease Splatters

Add salt to the pan when you’re cooking greasy foods like bacon, and the grease will be less likely to pop out of the pan and burn your hand. Or, add a couple of celery or parsley leaves instead. Who knew?

Rinse Before Cooking

Always rinse bacon under cold water before frying—better yet, let it soak in ice-cold water for 2–4 minutes, then dry it well with paper towels before frying it. This will both keep it from spattering and make it shrink less.

Make a Bacon Bowl

You may have seen a product on TV that allows you to make bacon bowls, and thought you’d only get to experience it in your dreams. Well guess what—you can make your own bacon bowls at home with a muffin tin. Here’s how to do it.

The Best Way to Save Bacon

If you can’t eat a whole package of bacon before it goes bad, you’re an amateur! But luckily, there’s an easy way to freeze bacon so that it’s easy to unfreeze only what you need. Just roll each individual slice into a tight cylinder, place in an airtight plastic bag, and freeze. Simply thaw and unroll the slice when you’re ready to cook! You’ll never be able to tell it was frozen.
